Laparoscopic Surgery

Increasingly keyhole or laparoscopic surgery is being used as an effective alternative to traditional or 'open' surgery for the treatment of colorectal conditions. Indeed, most colorectal conditions needing surgery can now be treated using keyhole techniques.

Laparoscopic surgery involves making very small (5 to 10mm) incisions through which to pass a tiny camera and all instruments. The abdominal cavity is filled with air or carbon dioxide to enable the camera and instruments to have sufficient space within which to work efficiently. The operation can then take place in a normal time span.

Keyhole surgery results in less post operative pain and patients are generally able to move around with greater comfort far earlier than if they had undergone open surgery. In general there is an earlier discharge from hospital and a faster recovery. However it must be noted that not all conditions are suitable for laproscopic surgery, so please discuss with your surgeon.
